Georgia’s ski areas have reported a 25 percent growth in visitor numbers in the season just completed, compared to winter 16-17, according to official data. The total number passed the half million mark for the first time, at 514,874.
The growth continues a trend which has seen the number of visitors grow by almost 500% since 2012.
“The data became available by installing contactless check points by the Austrian company SKIDATA, which allows us to accurately calculate the number of visitors. This system operates at all four of Georgia’s ski resorts”, Georgia’s Ministry of Economy reported in a statement.
Goderdzi in the Adjara region is reported to receive the most visitors and it saw 129 percent growth since last season.
Georgia’s ski areas made world headlines for the wrong reasons in the final months of this past season when a video of a chairlift going backwards at speed flinging skiers off at its base went viral.
A few weeks later the country was also part of a wide swathe of countries to receive orange snowfall after precipitation mixed with African dust storms.
