The giant Fosun corporation which owns a number of formerly European companies including Club Med has announced they will open a new ski resort near Beijing ahead of the city hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Club Med already operates two ski resorts in northeastern China in Heilongjiang’s Yabuli and Jilin’s Beidahu. The new resort will be located in the Chongli district, about three hours’ drive from the capital. No opening date for the new resort has yet been given.
Several of China’s highest quality, biggest and best-equipped ski resorts, including the Secret Garden resort operated by Malaysia’s Genting Berhad and the privately-held Wanlong ski area are already operating in the Chongli district,
“There is a shortage of ski resorts and facilities in China,” said Qian Jiannong, chairman and chief executive officer of Fosun Tourism Group told The South China Morning Post.
Fosun is also building an indoor ski resort near Shanghai and working with the École du Ski Français on offering French-standard ski tuition.
“We will focus on an asset light strategy. Instead of owning resorts, we will team up with Chinese developers to manage their resorts under Club Med brand,” Qian said.
