Skier Numbers Up in Switzerland
10th January 2019
Swiss ski resorts are reporting numbers up overall for the peak Christmas/New Year period.
Despite reporting the third warmest Autumn in Switzerland ever, snow in December built up bases on higher slopes to provide good cover ahead of the main season start. Subsequently weather conditions have stated relatively benign with, as yet, no repeat of the extremes of January last year when resorts were closed and cut off on multiple occasions due to huge snowfalls.
Verbier has reported particular good conditions and strong visitor numbers with the lift company reporting 20,000+ skiers a day on the slopes over the Christmas period.
In the Villars-Gryon-Diablerets area the lift company reported operations almost at capacity with 8,000 skiers a day which compared to 1,500 a day for the same period last year when the area was being hit by storms.
Many other areas have reported business up, with the St Moritz region reporting the biggest ‘region’ growth of 10.6%.
